What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Language Pathology, often abbreviated as “SLP” or “ST”, is the art and applied science of helping people regain their communication, cognitive/ memory and swallowing skills.  The treatment plan is customized to each individual’s needs.  Those experiencing difficulty with a change or loss of memory, problem solving abilities, articulation of words and the comprehension or expression of oral, written, graphic or manual sign languages, may benefit from the skilled services of a Speech Language Pathologist.  In addition, those suffering from a medical condition that has affected their ability to chew and swallow food safely and causing them to choke when eating or drinking, may also benefit from the services of a Speech Language Pathologist.   SLPs are licensed health care professionals with a master’s or doctorate degree in speech language pathology and are directed by a code of ethics.
